Epitalon Research Evidence: What the Published Studies Show and Where They Are Thin
A source-by-source look at the cell, rodent and human literature on the AEDG tetrapeptide, including who produced it and what has been replicated.
Epitalon (epithalon) is the synthetic tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. A search of PubMed on 29 October 2026 for epitalon, epithalon, epithalamin or the Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly sequence returned 233 records, which looks like a deep literature. It is narrower than it looks: restricting the same search to records with Khavinson as an author returns 133 of the 233, and Anisimov, a frequent co-author, appears on 43. Vladimir Khavinson's group designed the peptide, and a large share of what has been published about it comes from that group and its collaborators.
This article goes through the three main bodies of work, cell studies, rodent studies and human studies, and says which results have been repeated elsewhere. It is a reading guide for researchers, not medical advice.
Cell studies: telomerase and telomere length
The best-known result is the 2003 report from Khavinson and colleagues that adding epitalon to telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblasts induced expression of the telomerase catalytic subunit, telomerase activity and telomere elongation. A 2004 follow-up used pulmonary fibroblasts from a 24-week fetus and reported that treated cells with elongated telomeres made ten extra divisions, 44 passages, compared with controls. Both papers are short, and their abstracts give no sample sizes, concentrations or statistics.
There is now one independent confirmation in vitro. In 2025 a group at Brunel University London reported dose-dependent telomere lengthening in normal human cells through upregulation of hTERT and telomerase, and a different, ALT-related effect in cancer cell lines. The authors declared no competing interests. An erratum for that paper was published later, and we have not reviewed what it changed. All of this work is in cultured cells, and a telomere effect in a dish does not establish an effect in an organism.
Rodent lifespan and tumour studies
Anisimov and colleagues treated female SHR mice, 54 per group, from three months of age until death. Epitalon did not change food consumption, body weight or mean life span. It did lengthen the life span of the last 10% of survivors by 13.3% and the maximum life span by 12.3%. Total spontaneous tumour incidence was unchanged, while leukaemia development was reduced 6.0-fold.
Other models give a mixed picture. In senescence-accelerated mice, longer mean and maximum survival was seen in the last 10% of survivors of the SAMP-1 strain, with no effect on tumour frequency. In rats, epitalon did not change life span under a standard day-night regime, but maximum life span was longer by 95 days under natural light and by 24 days under constant light, and tumour development was inhibited only under natural light. A 2006 study in C3H/He mice, with Anisimov among the authors and the first author at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reported fewer mice bearing malignant tumours and no metastases in treated animals, but had no lifespan outcome.
Across these studies the pattern is that mean life span usually does not move, effects show up in the longest-lived animals, and results depend on the model and on conditions such as lighting.
Human data
Most of the human studies cited in support of epitalon used epithalamin, the natural pineal extract, not the synthetic peptide. Reports from the Khavinson group and from a geriatrics institute in Kyiv describe lower mortality among elderly participants given epithalamin, in one case over a 12-year randomised study. The abstracts are short and do not give the full design, and they cannot be transferred to a defined four-amino-acid peptide.
For the peptide itself, a 2002 paper from the same St. Petersburg group reported a positive clinical effect in 90% of patients with degenerative retinal lesions, but the abstract gives no patient numbers, study arms or blinding.
An October 2026 narrative review by clinicians at several US institutions, who declare no financial interest in epitalon, summarised the position this way: human evidence is limited to small physiological or biomarker studies and an older controlled study in retinitis pigmentosa, and no adequately powered randomised trial has established therapeutic efficacy. Its conclusion was that epitalon is biologically active but clinically unproven.
Other independent work
Outside the Khavinson network, the independent papers we found are small in vitro studies. A 2022 paper from Chinese groups reported that epitalon delayed post-ovulatory ageing of mouse oocytes in culture through effects on mitochondrial activity and reactive oxygen species. A 2025 study from South Korea reported better maturation of bovine oocytes and better development of post-thaw embryos in vitro. A 2025 review by Polish authors notes that physico-chemical and structural investigation of the peptide remains quite limited.
How to read this literature
Four points sum it up. First, authorship is concentrated, so independent replication matters more than the count of papers. Second, the telomerase result has one independent in vitro confirmation, with a later erratum. Third, the animal results are mixed and condition-dependent. Fourth, human evidence for the synthetic peptide is thin, and the stronger-sounding human claims concern the extract.
That makes epitalon a hypothesis-generating tool, best used with defined controls and with the batch-level identity and purity data in hand. Our companion article walks through reading an epitalon certificate of analysis. QSC supplies epitalon in 10 mg and 50 mg vials strictly for laboratory research; it is not approved for human or veterinary use, and nothing here is a dosing recommendation.
